First gun shot death of 2009
By this time last year, there were four deadly shootings in the city of Wilmington. There hadn’t been any in 2009, until late Saturday night when seventeen-year-old Tyshawn Gause was shot and killed.
“I heard a gun shot, but I thought it was a firecracker cause people popping firecrackers around here,” said Larisha Rogers.
Police say Gause was shot on the corner of Eighth and Red Cross streets.
Witnesses say they saw a blue Dodge Intrepid with black tinted windows drive by and shoot him in the face.
He stumbled to the corner where a crowd of witnesses say they tried to help stop the bleeding, and calm him down.
Now it’s up to police to find Gause’s killer.
Neighbors we spoke with say they all know who did it, but aren’t willing to talk.
Gause did have a criminal record for breaking and entering and resisting arrest. His family said he wasn’t perfect, but he was their son, and nothing will bring him back.
“He minded me, and respected me to a certain extent, but he was a teenager and he did what he wanted to do,” said his mother LaKeitha Smith.
The family doesn’t believe Tyshawn Gause was involved in a gang; however, police are investigating all leads and may have a suspect in mind.
