NC child killer denied parole for 15th time
CHARLOTTE — North Carolina officials have again denied parole to a 64-year-old man serving a life prison sentence for killing a girl in 1979.
The Charlotte Observer reported Thursday that the North Carolina Parole Commission denied parole to Fred Coffey. Department of Correction spokesman Keith Acree says it’s the 15th time Coffey has been denied parole for the Mecklenburg County crime.
Coffey was convicted twice and sentenced to death for smothering 10-year-old Amanda Ray on July 18, 1979. The death sentences were overturned by the state Supreme Court and a third jury split and Coffey was sentenced to life in prison.
The man also was suspected of killing a 5-year-old boy but never was charged.
