Fed hold red wolf recovery program in NC

Body

COLUMBIA, N.C. — Federal wildlife specialists are holding a teacher education program on the recovery of the rare red wolf at an eastern North Carolina refuge.

The program Thursday is designed to teach the teachers about the endangered animal that was reintroduced to the wild in North Carolina. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says North Carolina is home to the world’s only wild population of red wolves.

The wolf can be found in parts of Dare, Tyrrell, Hyde, Washington and Beaufort counties.

Red wolves once were common in the Southeast but were killed as nuisances until they were declared extinct in the wild by 1980. Pairs of the wolf from a captive breeding program were placed in the Alligator River Wildlife refuge in 1987.
