Carolina Beach sees large amount of visitors, some crime

Body

Come to the north end of Carolina Beach on the weekends, and it will look a little bit like a can sardines. Hundreds of people camped out, enjoying the beach. But somewhere in the mix, things can easily go wrong.

“Anytime you put that many people in the same place, at the same time, occasionally some tempers are going to flare,” said Carolina Beach Mayor Dan Wilcox.

North end beachgoer, George Wilhelm said, “I’ve never questioned my safety, but when you mix a bunch of people together, it’s bound to cause some problem, sometimes.”

Sunday, around 2:00 a.m., police say a few of those beachgoers had too much to drink and got into a fight which ended in someone getting stabbed. The incident involved two men, allegedly dating the same woman.

A few days before that, in a separate incident, another man was stabbed near the public boat ramp.

But nearly three months into summer, two incidents like these, while unfortunate, are statistically low compared with the number of people who spend time at Carolina Beach. “Actually, we’ve been having a good year,” said Wilcox. “Lots of families have been down at the beach, lost of good times. Just lots of people, and you would think lost of people meant lots of trouble, but we haven’t had lots of trouble.”

One reason the crime has been so low this season is thanks to the Boardwalk Makeover Committee, a group of people dedicated to changing the image and reputation of Carolina Beach.

Police say that community involvement is one reason why crime has been low this season.

The stabbings occurred after dark, and alcohol was involved.
