DMV looks at improvements to cut down on the wait

Body

Spending long hours at the DMV may soon turn into just minutes. A new ID system has been designed to cut down on the wait, as well as those trying to beat system.

The normal process of test taking, renewing your license and posing for the camera is still normal routine at the DMV, but drivers will no longer walk away with a new license in hand, it will now arrive in the mail.

“This is just another step to ensure that we are getting proper identification, proper driving privileges to the right people,” said DMV senior examiner Dale Rankin.

New and old drivers will have a waiting period for the Division of Motor Vehicles to check the background of applicants. In the mean time, a temporary id will be issued. Leaving the DMV you typically want to walk out with plastic, but on your next visit, you’ll be leaving with paper.

Drivers will be issued a temporary driving certificate. The DMV said the new plastic license will be sent to you within 20 days. Your old license can be used as photo ID until the new one arrives.

Officials said this will help cut down on identity theft, address fraud and the long wait in line. ‚ÄúSince we are not capturing an image and putting it on hard plastic, it’s only going to take about ten seconds. That process will be a little bit faster – actually a lot faster.” This is good news for everyone in those packed waiting room.

Driver license offices in area will each close for half a day this week as the DMV moves to change over their operation system for ID’s.

The schedule of office closures are:

The office in Whiteville will close at noon Tuesday and reopen at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.
Tabor City will be closed from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday.
Elizabethtown and Shallotte will close at noon Wednesday and reopen Thursday at 8:00 a.m.
Burgaw will be closed from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday.
In Wilmington, the office on Carolina Beach Road will be closed from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday. The office off Market Street will close at noon Thursday and reopen at 8:00 a.m. Friday morning.
