$10M bond reduced for man in Duke student killing
DURHAM — A North Carolina judge has reduced the bond amount for a 19-year-old man charged with killing a Duke University graduate student last year.
Multiple media outlets report that Superior Court Judge Orlando F. Hudson on Tuesday reduced Stephen Oates’ bond from $10 million to $1.5 million.
Oates is charged with murder and armed robbery in the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Abhijit Mahato. Originally from Tatangar, India, Mahato was studying computational mechanics at the private school in Durham.
Prosecutors said Oates and Laurence Lovette robbed Mahato at his home in January 2008 and shot him in the head. Lovette also faces murder charges in the March 2008 death of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson.
