Budget cuts hit Huskins Program and students

Video

Body

State budget cuts will mean fewer educational options for advanced high school students.

The Huskins Program allows high school students to earn college credits before they graduate. However, state budget cuts mean students will no longer be able to take general education classes for free.

About 700 students use the program at Cape Fear Community College each year. Now schools and students are looking for an alternative to get a head start. “They may be disappointed that they can’t take psychology or communications from us anymore,” said CFCC program coordinator Robin Hardin. “However, if we continue to focus on what we can do then we’ll be able to serve those students in some capacity.”

Students will still be able to take math, science, and technology classes through the Huskins Program, however space in those classes are usually limited.
