Wahines take to Wrightsville Beach

Hundreds of wahines took to the beach this weekend for what has become an east coast surfing tradition. The 13th Annual East Coast Wahine Championships were held at Wrightsville Beach.

The contest is the only one on the east coast to feature all female surfers. This year, 130 women from as far away as Hawaii came to compete.

The event was inspired years ago in memory of a lost loved one and has continued ever since. Women of all ages and levels of experience come to compete for prizes and fun.

“Girls get a whole bunch of really nice goodies, t-shirts and everything. So we’re really thankful to the sponsors that came through this year and we’re happy to be here and have great weather and be blessed with waves. Surfs up,” said Maryann Mangiacatre of East Coast Wahines.

One of the highlights of this year’s event was when the Ten and Under Guppy Division took to the waves. The girls are allowed some parental assistance in the water. This year’s youngest participant was only four years old.

The event ended Sunday afternoon with an awards ceremony.
