Brunswick County Animal Shelter gives OK on adoptions

Dog adoptions are back on at the Brunswick County Animal Shelter. Adoptions were put on hold last month after two dogs tested positive for distemper, a highly-contagious respiratory disease.

After a visit from the vet and consultations with the health department, animals at the shelter were found in good condition, and adoptions have resumed. That is good news for those in search of a four legged companion.

“She seems good. She was playing around in the room – so we will see,” said James Moore as he adopted a dog from the shelter.

David Swain, Animal Services Director said, “It’s a community based disease and there is nothing we can do about that, but at least we can do everything here with giving them vaccinations.”

Officials said every animal that comes into the shelter will now be required to receive a distemper vaccine.

If you have questions about adoptions or distemper, call Brunswick County Animal Services at 755-6434.
