Area businesses glad to see students return to campus
It’s a wonderful time of year for businesses near UNCW. When students move back on campus, it’s a big economic boost.
It comes at a perfect time since the summer months have been slow for area shops.
With a sea of Seahawks settling in campus, that means a big break for area businesses.
“It always picks up this time of year having the students come back, and we like to see the students and professors come back,” said Jeter Griffin, owner of Jeter’s Hot Dogs.
Business owners like Griffin have waited all year to see his bottom line go up. He said during the school year his restaurant is packed with students, faculty and staff. “Usually August, all of our months are pretty good, except May and June can be a little slow sometimes.”
Ed Majeski of Sport Clips says his hair salon is in a prime location. “I’m within a mile of the campus, so kids can walk, bike, and it’s certainly within a distance of their travel.”
For most students, not having a car on campus means it’s important to have easy access to shops and restaurants.
Majeski says June and July are two of his slowest months, so he looks to August and September to make up for the sluggish business. “Here in Wilmington, everything is so transient, it’s hard to get them in here, so it’s nice to get the kids back on campus.”
A lot of businesses close to UNCW offer students coupons and special deals, which is even more of an incentive for them to frequent shops around campus.
