Struggles aside, many traveling for Labor Day

Body

For many families, Labor Day weekend marks the end of the summer season. For vacationers it’s also the last chance to get away and AAA expects plenty of people to take advantage.

“I still think people are still trying to get that last little vacation in even though the kids are back in school,” said AAA manager Sarah Hall.

For many people the Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer and the end of the family vacation season. Despite some struggling economic indicators AAA still expects to see an increase in holiday getaways. “Even though gas prices are a little bit higher and unemployment is a little higher, people are still traveling, so there’s definitely an increase, especially in North Carolinians,” Hall said.

AAA expects 100,000 more vacationers than the Memorial Day weekend, an increase of more than 12 percent.

“I am going to visit friends and relatives in troy, north Carolina which is a 3 hour drive,” said traveler Silvia Sain.

AAA expects most people to pile in the car for their getaway. Historically Labor Day weekend is slow at ILM and with seats on flights to popular vacation destinations still available, it’s no different this year.

“Kids are back in school, pretty much the vacation travel is over for the season, and hence Labor Day travel is not always a big issue,” said ILM Director of Operations Gary Broughton.

But some people say they’ll skip the trip this time around; taking a vacation is just too expensive, especially when they’re already in a tourist destination.

“I think we’re just going to hang out here in Wilmington. Hopefully the weather is nice enough. You know you live by the beach, there’s really no need to go anywhere,” said Chris Murray who is staying put this holiday weekend.

AAA says more people are traveling at the end of the summer than the beginning because there is a pent up demand for vacations.

Economic uncertainty caused people to put off their plans till the end of the summer, but now that the last holiday weekend of the season is approaching, many vacationers are taking the plunge.
