Two NC special-ed schools fear ‘dangerous’ label

RALEIGH — Assaults at two North Carolina schools for special-education students have put them at risk of being labeled dangerous and monitored by state administrators this year.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Thursday that the state Board of Education will consider exempting schools like Longview in Raleigh and Metro in Charlotte from the persistently dangerous designation.

The Charlotte school serves about 200 students and the Raleigh school half that number. Many of the students are emotionally disabled. Longview has security cameras, small classes and a policy of adults escorting each student to the bathroom.

State school board chairman William Harrison says it’s unfair for such small, specialized schools to be placed on the dangerous list.
