Midwifery practice expands for one Wilmington group

One Wilmington group is expanding its midwifery practice. The South East Area Health Education Center, or SEAHEC, announced Thursday that Susan Carney will join its team. Carney is the program’s second certified nurse midwife.

Carolina OB/GYN recently discontinued its midwifery program, which prompted protests from local women who used their services. While those women are happy to see a new midwife in town, they said they are not completely satisfied.

“We had three midwives and now we’re up to two, but even with three, they weren’t meeting the needs of women; they were turning people away,” said midwife supporter Anna Van Wagoner.

Certified nurse midwife Susan Carney said, “I’m just really excited about having this opportunity to maybe help in some of the demand for midwifery care here in Wilmington.”

The midwife supporters said they applaud SEAHEC for its addition, but will continue to push for an open dialogue with the hospital about changes they would like to see.
