Wilmington arts education center has DREAMS come true

Video

Body

Dreams are coming true for an arts education center in Wilmington. The DREAMS Center just got a $400,000 grant for youth mentoring. The funding comes from the Office of Juvenile Justice as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It will help create opportunities for at-risk youth, in an effort to reduce gang involvement, and the school dropout rate.

“I can’t tell you how much it will help us because we were already looking at cutting our budget by 25 percent, and that 25 percent would have really affected the outreach program,” said DREAMS Center co-founder Tracy Wilkes. “The outreach program is aimed at children who are in need and who are some of the most marginalized and vulnerable kids in our community.”

Even though DREAMS has government support, it is still trying to raise money on its own. The DREAMS Center is hosting a fundraiser October 9th featuring live student performances, an art sale, and an auction.

For more information on the center and its upcoming events, you can visit www.dreamswilmington.org.
