Wrightsville Beach prepares for busy Labor Day weekend

When you live in a beach town, the last weekend of summer is a big deal. WWAY’s Hailey Winslow hit Wrightsville Beach to see how the town is preparing for the Labor Day holiday.

Wilmington’s Ian Lipton said, “There’s going to be tons of cars, tons of people, the whole beach is going to be going crazy, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

“Between the hotel bills and you know eating out and buying a few things, yeah we’ll spend a few hundred dollars in the next few days,” said Scott Blackwood visiting from Atlanta, Ga.

As the crowds roll in this Labor Day weekend, businesses are getting prepared.

“I just ordered about 550 pounds of fresh local fish to be coming all through this weekend,” said Oceanic executive chef, Robert Newton.

Some hotels right on the beach still have vacancies, but they are expecting to book up.

“We just dropped the rates down today, so hopefully we’ll get a lot of walk-ins, for the weekend, that’s usually how it happens, people just walk in and see if rooms are available,” added Jeremy LeJeune of Surf Motel Suites.

Wrightsville Beach Town Hall is taking extra safety measures. Town manager Robert Simpson said, “We have additional staff on duty, we’ll be doing sanitation pick ups on the beach everyday, we have extra people on board as far as law enforcement is concerned, so we’ll be fully staffed and actually in the evenings, we’ll have about double the number of police officers on duty.”

Folks visiting from out of town said they are ready to soak up the sun. “I want to get a lot of sun, because when I go back, everything is closed,” said Denver, Colorado’s Kate Holmgren.

Wrightsville Beach Town Hall Manager Robert Simpson hopes this weekend is a boost for businesses, but safety is his number one concern.
