Brunswick man shot and killed by authorities

Body

A domestic dispute in Supply turned deadly last night. A Brunswick County Sheriff’s Deputy shot and killed a man, and the SBI is now investigating.

Parents of the shooting victim question whether or not an argument between the couple should have led to the death of their son.

Family members say Alton Lawrence Walters and his girlfriend had been in an argument for several days leading up to Sunday’s shooting.

“She called me afraid, and we were coming back from Ocean Isle and she said I’m so afraid, he’s come in, he’s wrecked his moped right there and he was blood on his knee cap,” said the sister of Walters’ girlfriend.

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Bradley Hardee responded to the call at 2370 Captain’s Wheel Avenue in Supply.

After he arrived, at around 7:30, neighbors and family say they heard a gun shot inside the house where Walters lived with his girlfriend.

Walters’ girlfriend’s sister said, “I thought maybe they shot him where it wouldn’t kill him or something, but I guess, I don’t know what he did.”

Lawrence Walters has a criminal record that includes a felony conviction from 2000 for indecent liberties with a minor.

Despite several calls to law enforcement for past domestic disputes, and a restraining order, Walters’ girlfriend had the order dropped so the two could live together.

The shooting victim’s father, Alton George Walters, lives only about a mile from the home where his son was shot. “Something had happened to Lawrence, with a phone call that was made by a neighbor down there, and she told us that we ought to go down there, because she believed Lawrence had been shot,” he said.

Alton George Walters, went to the home, but Sheriff’s Deputies would not let him see his son. “He was a good boy, he’d made a lot of mistakes drinking and having fun, and we’ll miss him a lot.”

Friends, family, and neighbors say 49-year-old Alton Lawrence Walters and his girlfriend had a contentious relationship dating back to 2000.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office would not comment on any details surrounding the shooting or Deputy Hardee’s status.
