Atmosphere Academy: Elementary School Newscast
So how do elementary school students with an interest in broadcast meteorology learn about newscasts? By making one of their own, naturally.
Most of us remember the early morning routine at school. Around 8 AM, the bell would sound and you would here the morning announcements on the old intercom. Well, they do things a bit differently at Union Elementary School. Each Monday morning, select 5th graders put on their own morning newscasts, complete with news on current events in the school and the students take their job seriously. After all, 5th graders have to apply for positions on the news staff, not unlike real life.
It gives them a vested interest in making sure their product is top notch. But when I found out the students put on their own weathercasts, well we just had to have them over for a visit. And they picked up things fast. So the next time parents tune-in to watch the morning news, just remember that some area students are doing the very same thing.
