Summer of 2009 now in the books

Body

It’s official, the summer of 2009 has come and gone. At 5:18 pm Tuesday evening, the sun passed directly overhead the equator, signaling the autumnal equinox and the start of a new season. But just how did our summer stack up here in Wilmington?

Looking at the numbers for the 2009 summertime season, it actually shaped up to be rather close to average for summertime. The temperature fell just a bit below the seasonal average, one and a half degrees below normal for the summer months. In the rainfall department, believe it or not we were still below where we should be, falling about a half an inch short of our annual mark.

Many folks wouldn’t think of this summer as a dry one though as flooding became a big story. A stormy July night dropped over six inches of rain in Wilmington, flooding New Centre Drive and other locations around the Port City.

Floods struck Pender County in early September with reports of as much as nine inches of rain falling in one day. Measuring summertime rainfall can be tricky because the rainfall usually comes from thunderstorms, which can be very uneven when it comes to distributing the water around.

It’s hard to think of summer weather without thinking of hurricanes, but they were noticeably absent this year.

The summer of 2009 didn’t feature too much in the way of tropical activity. Very few storms did form, in fact the latest start to a season since 1992, and those that did form stayed away from the Carolinas.

And so we say goodbye to summer and hello to fall, the season of change.
