Rezoning request sparks discussion over Summer Walk development

Body

A new 26-acre development near the intersection of Oleander Drive and Greenville Loop Road in Wilmington was up for discussion Monday night. The development is called Summer Walk.

If the Wilmington City Council approves the rezoning request then Summer Walk will include single-family housing, low-density-multi-family housing and office space.

Attorney Matt Nichols said the development will be a benefit to the city of Wilmington and the surrounding neighborhoods.

“If you developed the property in a piecemeal fashion with different developers who developed it over time, you wouldn’t have the comprehensive planning approach that we’ll plan for. The transportation engineering, the drainage, storm water management, and also the general land use planning that you can get with the conditional district re-zoning that we are requesting,” he said.

Bonnie Culter opposes the project and said, “Now they want to put a 3-story office building on Greenville Loop Road and it’s just not in character with our residential family neighborhood.”

Wilmington City Council is expected to vote on the rezoning request in January. In order to pass, at least six council members have to approve the request.
