Charlotte hospitals fight flu in NC with child ban

CHARLOTTE — Hospitals in North Carolina’s largest city are taking a new tack in the effort to prevent the spread of flu to patients by banning visits by children under the age of 18.

The Charlotte Observer reported that hospital officials said they couldn’t remember making such a blanket restriction on visits by children in the past. The ban goes into effect Thursday.

Carolinas HealthCare System and Novant Health announced the ban in a joint statement Monday. They say it will remain in effect until flu cases have declined significantly, probably several months.

Health officials say the number of flu cases is typical of wintertime peaks even though it’s early in the season.

Children will be allowed to visit dying relatives and will be able to accompany parents to the emergency room.
