The future of historic Wilmington was the topic of discussion at a downtown meeting Tuesday night. The Historic Wilmington Foundation and Wilmington Downtown, Inc. asked for the public’s ideas and support.

They are trying to strengthen standards for demolishing historic buildings and offer incentives to property owners to save the old structures. They hope to take the ideas to City Council.

“Over one third of downtown property is either vacant or a surface parking lot,” said Wilmington Downtown, Inc.’s John Hinnant. “Downtown needs to be a dense mix of buildings and we hope to encourage and provide an incentive for the development of those lots.”

One idea discussed at the meeting is to prohibit property owners from destroying a historic building until the owner has come up with future plans for the property.
