Residents of Leland are being asked to be pro-active in order to put a halt on a recent rise in car break-ins.

There have been dozens of vehicle break-ins in Leland in the last few months. In every case, the vehicle was left unlocked.

NewsChannel 3 followed Leland police detectives around several Leland neighborhoods Tuesday. Magnolia Greens, Snee Farm, Waterford, and Stony Creek have been the targeted neighborhoods so far.

“Almost all of the cases are preventable. In fact all of our cases involve vehicles that have not been locked,” said Detective Robert Ernest of the Leland Police Department. “They’re looking for GPS’s, Game Boys, video cameras, little TV monitors, cell phones, anything electronic, essentially anything the thieves can get a hold of. They then go to the pawn shop and sell it for a quick buck.”

Leland Police recommends removing all items of value from your car, or keeping them locked in your trunk.

The police department recommends you give them a call if you see a suspicious vehicle in your neighborhood late at night.
