Folks in Wilmington were seeing “green” Wednesday night. The Green Living Expo, sponsored by the Greater Wilmington Business Journal and WWAY, featured more than 40 vendors. Each of them exhibited ways for folks to be a little more eco-friendly.

Whether it be the house, or the garden, visitors said the event was a great way to learn more about how to help the environment. “I’m very interested in new green products that are coming out. I already do some green things at my house, rain barrels, solar panels, things like that, but I’m very interested in the new technologies and how they’re coming to Wilmington and how I can be a part of it,” said Barbara Bach.

The expo ended with the presentation of the Visions of Green Wilmington Awards. Three awards were handed out to people who have ideas, or finished projects that make Wilmington a little greener.

One award was handed out for the Cape Fear Regional soccer park. The park was completed on top of a landfill.

Another award was given to Jill Webb who had the idea of creating a play fountain and riverfront park downtown.

The third award went to Howard Capps, who suggested a bike path on the future Cape Fear Skyway Bridge.

An honorable mention went to a Roland Grise student who wrote an essay, urging business owners to turn out their lights after business hours. “My idea is pretty simple. Just turn your lights out after you leave your business,” said Lily Herring. “You know how your mom tells you to turn your lights out after you leave the room? Well I thought we could convey that in to the bigger picture.”

People who entered the contest, had to write a 400 word essay and submit a picture representing their idea.
