Christmas may still be months away, but Monday some families took steps to ensure their holiday is a happy one.

Folks lined up outside the old Haverty’s building in Wilmington Monday, filling out applications to receive toys, clothing and other items for Christmas. It is a program put on by the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary. The goal is to provide Christmas for families in need. Some people waited in line for over an hour to get their names on the list.

“I have five grandkids that I’m raising, three of them live with me, and right now my job is slow,” said Wilmington’s Bonnie Stalls. “I haven’t really been making the money, and kids really need something for Christmas. It’s really good when they wake up in the morning and get something that they really love for Christmas. This helps children more than anything else.”

The auxiliary will be accepting applications again on Friday, and next Thursday at the old Haverty’s building on Oleander Drive.
