Azalea Festival Garden Tour gives back to community

Body

The Azalea Festival Garden Tour is about more than showing off beautiful lawns and gardens in our area. It is also a way to give back to the community.

That is just what happened Tuesday. The Cape Fear Garden Club, which organizes the tour every year, handed out about $80,000 in grants.

The money is going to 22 different organizations, including nine schools and four museums. The Cape Fear Children’s Museum received a grant, and is looking forward to putting the money to use.

“In these times, when you need just a little to make something work, these grants make it work,” said museum executive director Rick Lawson. “You’ve got your building, you’ve got your personnel, but they put the things in kids hands to do.”

Donna Pendergrast of the Cape Fear Garden Club said, “It’s the highlight of our year, it really is. We are so glad to do this and its so gratifying to see all the beautification, conservation and education that goes on through the funds.”

Like every year, part of the grant money goes toward scholarships at UNCW and Cape Fear Community College.
