Students dismissed after Hazmat situation at Topsail High School

It was a topsy turvy day at Topsail High. More than 1,000 students spent their day outside on the bleachers at the football field after they noticed a strange odor coming from a Spanish classroom.

Thursday morning three students were treated after sources said they passed out.

EMS, police and Hazmat crews quickly came to the school. After more than four hours of testing air quality and checking pipes in the school, which opened less than a year ago, Hazmat could not identify the source of the odor.

Parents came to the school trying to pick their kids up, but officials said no one was allowed to leave.

Parents were also concerned that their children were not fed until 3:00 Thursday afternoon.

School officials told WWAY that Hazmat wanted to clear everything before kids were allowed to eat, drink or leave campus.

Sheriff Carson Smith told WWAY for the most part, parents, teachers and students were cooperative.

This event has caused school officials to reconsider their emergency plan.
