New cars on the lot at D&E
Wednesday was a big day for the D&E car dealership in Wilmington; new cars are on the lot once again.
D&E is one of the oldest car dealerships in Wilmington. They sold new Dodges for about sixty years until this past June when Chrysler went bankrupt and terminated D&E’s contract with Dodge.
The dealership moved exclusively to selling used cars, which is where they started.
Today, they rolled out 10 new Mitsubishis.
“It feels good to be back in the new car business,” said Andy Craven.
Craven was all smiles today. From now on D&E will be known as D&E Mitsubishi.
The Market Street dealership pursued a franchise with the Japanese automaker when Chrysler dropped them back in June. Now Mitsubishis will replace the empty parking spaces once dominated by dodge pick-ups.
“It’s a big change, you know we sold the big trucks that people used for their daily activities, they used them a lot at work, they weren’t the most fuel-economical vehicles but we did have a lot of success and I do miss selling the trucks,” Craven said.
Craven says selling more economical cars in this economy will help keep business in gear. “The Japanese quality has a great reputation for great quality, their fuel economy is good, their warranties are fantastic, and it’s just a win-win situation.”
That’s what attracted Ginger Robles to check out the 2010’s. She’s trying to find a car for her son. “The Mitsubishi that my son has now has been a wonderful car, so I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another Mitsubishi.”
By the end of this week, the sign will be coming down and a new sign will go up that says D&E Mitsubishi, but they’re not going to take the variety of used cars off the lot.
“Dodges, Chryslers, Jeeps, Toyotas, Hondas, Hyundai’s, we’ve got a little bit of everything,” Craven said.
Selling both new and used, Craven says, is the best move. “We are just excited about being a new car dealer again.”
The new Mitsubishis start at around $17,000 and go up to $34,000. They’re being inspected today and will be ready to purchase tomorrow. In the coming months, D&E will be getting Mitsubishi hybrids.
