Rondo Words: A Troubling Story
Try as we might to personally distance ourselves from the stories we read on the air, some cut through the emotional armor and grab us by the heart. And so it has been this week for me with the story five-year-old Shaniya Davis in Fayetteville.
Shaniya was by all descriptions a sparkling little girl who enjoyed doing those things that five year olds do. If you’ve spent time with a five year old you know how much fun that can be. But now she’s dead.
There is much more to be learned in this case but police say the essence is that after growing up in the care of her father, Shaniya went to live with her mother. Within weeks, Shaniya came up missing. Police accuse her mother of selling Shaniya into a sex slavery arrangement. A five year old.
Mario McNeill was charged with kidnapping after he was caught on a hotel’s surveillance camera carrying Shaniya into a room, the last pictures we see of this five year old girl alive. Now he’s been charged with raping and asphyxiating her. A five year old.
The human mind can work in tortuously strange and twisted ways; especially if it’s fueled by drugs. In some small way this story would be easier to take if the allegations against Antoinette Davis, Shaniya’s mother, somehow prove untrue. To me there is no earthly bond more sacred or stronger than that of mother and child. To have that belief so fundamentally shaken is what makes Shaniya’s story so unsettling.
