Perdue: NC Medicaid program spending over budget
RALEIGH — Gov. Beverly Perdue says North Carolina’s Medicaid program is breaking the budget the Legislature gave state officials this summer.
Perdue told reporters Tuesday the government health insurance program for low-income children, older adults and the disabled is at least $150 million over budget through the first quarter of the fiscal year.
Perdue says more people are enrolling in Medicaid as the unemployment rate stay high. The governor also says the state has had to respond to the swine flu pandemic.
The Department of Health and Human Services said it would have more information later Tuesday and couldn’t immediately confirm Perdue’s figure. Department Secretary Lanier Cansler said in
October that 8,000 more people were enrolled in Medicaid than projected.
