Ways to prep your home for the cold weather

Body

With cold weather on the way, there are steps we all must take to make sure our homes are ready for the winter. Believe it or not, there are a lot of things to think about.

A lot of times, stilted homes tend to have uninsulated pipes that are exposed to the elements, meaning it could be a big problem. Insurance agent Payton Warren said, “Those pipes will burst and obviously cause damage. You want to make sure people are aware of how to cut water off to their house to prevent further damage. The best way is to go ahead and wrap those pipes, but its just something we don’t see people do because the freezes are so infrequent.”

Other items on your “outside” checklist:
– Clean out those gutters to avoid water seeping into your home.
– Trim any tree limbs that could fall under the weight of ice.
– And make sure you have strong railings along any stairs for those slippery mornings.

On the inside, space heaters can be a fire hazard. “They think that they can leave them running all night long or that they can leave them running when nobody’s at home or you’re not in the room. But we really encourage people not to use a space heater unless you’re in the room where you’re able to supervise it and make sure its not getting knocked over or anything like that,” said fire and life safety educator Meg Langston.

Following these helpful winter tips can ensure the coming months are safe and warm for your family.

With the rise in insurance rates along the coast in recent years, many folks now have higher deductibles, which means if your home is damaged due to the cold more money will be coming out of your pocket.
