NC posts malpractice case settlements online

RALEIGH — North Carolina medical consumers can now check whether their doctor has been convicted of crimes or been sued for malpractice in cases that were settled or lost.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday that the North Carolina Medical Board has expanded its Web site to include the data for its 35,000 licensed physicians and physician assistants.

Fewer than 1 percent have reported malpractice payments since May 2008, the starting date for the reporting requirement.

Doctors, hospitals and their insurers and defense lawyers objected to posting older malpractice data, prompting the General Assembly to set the threshold.

The Web site www.ncmedboard.org allows consumers to search by a doctor’s name or by city.
