Police and firefighters chip in to help needy children

Members of the Leland Police Officer’s Association and Leland Firefighters are helping out needy children this holiday season.

They have dropped off boxes at Wal-mart and other locations around Leland to collect unwrapped toys for underserved children in the Leland area.

Last year, officers donated more than 1,200 toys to needy kids in Leland, the boys and girls club, and local elementary schools. They are hoping for the public’s help again in this year’s toy drive.

“We all are tightening the belt a little bit, but there’s people out there that are worse off out there than we are and if they could just help out by dropping toys off at the locations that we have throughout town, that would help out quite a bit,” said Cpl. Robert Ernest.

Wilmington police officers are taking kids who need a helping hand this holiday season shopping at Wal-mart on December 17th.

Wilmington firefighters are helping out two needy families and collecting Toys for Tots at area fire stations.
