Topsail Humane Society temporarily closed to address violations

A state inspector found several problems at the Topsail Humane Society on Lewis Road in Hampstead. During a routine inspection in October, the structure and sanitation of the shelter, and description and disposition of animals were determined to be “inadequate”.

“Some of the fencing, the Department of Agriculture wanted us to repair that,” said shelter owner Kathy Lewis. “We’re actually just going to replace all the fencing for the pens and we’re going to put new roofs on the pens.”

Many of the issues had been fixed in time for a follow-up inspection a few days later.
Since then, the shelter has worked to fix the remaining problems. It’s putting a system in place to keep animal hair and feces from ending up in the surrounding lawn, and fixing the fencing.

The shelter gets its animals from Pender County Animal Control, to keep them from being euthanized. Volunteers plan to rescue more animals, soon.

The Topsail Humane Society hopes to completely re-open in the next couple of weeks, after they’ve finished repairs and pass inspection.

Though no animals are staying at the shelter, it remains open to spay and neuter animals.
