Seahawk students staring at possible tuition hike

Body

It looks tuition is on the way up at UNCW. Trustees met Friday to ponder their options.

UNCW board members approved a two percent increase in tuition that would affect all UNCW students and go into effect this fall.

“I feel like I pay a ton to go to this school, over $20,000 and it’s all in loans, so anything higher is going to cause even more stress,” said freshman Graham Windus.

After Friday’s Board of Trustees decision, Windus and other out of state Seahawk students could be paying an extra couple hundred dollars next fall.

A two percent increase means tuition would cost between 50 and 60 dollars more per year for in-state students; out-of-state students would pay about 270 dollars more per year.

The increase would bring more than $900,000 to UNCW’s campus. Half of that money would be used for financial aid, and the other half for new faculty positions.

The increase is not a done deal. The board’s decision is based on the state legislature repealing a system-wide eight percent tuition increase imposed earlier this year. That decision should be made in May.

If the legislature does not repeal the eight percent increase, UNCW can only increase out-of-state tuition, which Windus isn’t happy about. “To a college student, five dollars can mean a lot, I mean you have a lot of money when you have five dollars. So knowing that I’m down another $270, is a big setback, and it means careful spending and a lot more putting stuff away.”

Not all costs are going up, the board of trustees also approved a fourteen-dollar reduction in student fees.

Before the tuition and fee requests can be finalized, the UNC system Board of Governors has to approve today’s decisions in its February meeting. The state legislature has the final say.
