Monday marks busiest day for USPS

Body

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but it can often be the most hectic. The United States Postal Service delivers 16.6 billion cards and packages between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

A steady stream of customers lined up to get their letters and presents home for holidays at the Myrtle Grove post office on Monday, which marked the USPS’s busiest day of the year.

“I came here, there was a line, I had no idea,” said David Schifter.

The USPS estimates it will process 839 million pieces of mail today, Dec 14th.

Todd Daniel was mailing packages to Pennsylvania. “State College where my mom lives, so I won’t see her this Christmas, but this card and gift will be part of it.”

Sending Christmas cards may be one of the most traditional ways to say I love you during the holidays, but for some, the economy is changing the way we send our seasons greetings.

“If I know ya, I love ya, but you’re probably not getting a Christmas card this year. I’m going the cheap route either my email or telephone text message but hey it all means the same just minus the stamp,” Schifter said.

Still, Santa’s elves were busy at the post office, hard at work making sure you’re holiday greetings are on time.

Last minute shoppers still have some time. The deadline to send packages parcel post it Wednesday. The deadline to send something via first-class mail is December 21st, in order for it to arrive by Christmas.
