NC grand jury indicts former sheriff’s deputy

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A former North Carolina sheriff’s lieutenant has been indicted on 60 counts of obtaining property by false pretense after an investigation into his billing for off-duty work.

A spokeswoman for Attorney General Roy Cooper said Tuesday that indictments against Neelis Smith were returned by a grand jury in Cumberland County.

A message left at Smith’s home was not immediately returned.

Smith is one of two former sheriff’s office supervisors who were accused of billing the local school system and other government employers for security work taking place at different locations and the same time.

Smith and former Capt. LaRue Windham were fired in March 2008. The State Bureau of Investigation continues to work on Windham’s case.
