Major drug bust takes place in Brunswick County

Officers in the county’s drug enforcement unit began their day at 6:00 a.m., after eight months of preparation – with 46 drug warrants in hand.

“The drug dealers in this situation adapt to the way we operate, so therefore we have to continue to look for new and alternative ways to be able to catch them in the act,” said Brunswick County‚Äôs Sheriff John Ingram.

The unit was split up into three teams, each going to different parts of Brunswick County. Officers targeted specific trouble spots, like the one in Longwood known as The Quarters.

Resident Ann Bowling said, “I’m safe, but then I know somewhere not too far down from me about 5 miles there is a whole lot of drug stuff going on down there. People don’t want to go down there unless you’re going after drugs and stuff.”

Deputies searched the streets and knocked on doors, looking for suspects wanted in drug cases.
They seized an estimated $30,000 worth of marijuana, crack cocaine, prescription drugs and guns.

“The citizens that I’ve spoken to are very happy that we are out there aggressively enforcing the drug laws and we’re not only targeting street level dealers but we’re going after anyone and everyone involved in this drug trade,” added Ingram.

Resident Sheila Deason said, “I think they’re trying and I think it takes one step at a time and as long as they’re trying that’s the best they can do.”

This is the sheriff’s office third drug operation. This kind of mass warrant roundup can be very time consuming, but the sheriff said its worth it.

Officials arrested 22 people Wednesday. They will continue to look for those on their warrant list.
