“Women Build” home dedicated to deserving family

After four months of hard work, a new home is ready for Anayela’s family to move into – the latest project from the Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity. This project was something special. It is called “Women Build”, a project entirely organized and built by women.

“Its amazing. You just stand there and see all these women working. And obviously, women can do it too now, not only men,” said Anayela.

The home is being dedicated here just before the Christmas holiday, but much of the work was done under the hot summer sun.

“Some of the days were very hot, but it didn’t really phase too many of us. We just continued to move forward and to meet those goals and to get the job done. It was just an incredible experience,” said Women Build volunteer Nancy Mangiacapre.

Over 300 women lent their time, effort, and sweat to help make this house a reality; a process that many of the volunteers hold dear.

“We did it. You know, we all did it. And Christina the homeowner, she’s a wonderful human being, well deserving of what is here for her. And what we’ve all come together to make happen with the organization and as individuals and as a community,” said Mangiacapre.

Now that the house is complete, the Huerta family is ready to make it a home. Anayela said, “Its built and ready for us to be in, its amazing, and obviously a dream come true.”

The Habitat homes are earned, not given away. Recipients need to put in hours of “sweat equity” during the building process, and have an interest-free 30-year mortgage to pay once they move in.
