NC agency picks education over fences for bridges

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina transportation officials say an education effort would be more effective than putting fences on the state’s parallel bridges.

Multiple media outlets reported the state agency had been considering more fences on bridges like the Interstate-440 crossing in Raleigh where two good Samaritans died after stopping to help at wrecks.

The Department of Transportation study examined more than 13,000 bridges and analyzed crash reports. It says 73 good Samaritans have been injured and 21 killed in the state since 2000. The study showed four sites where people have accidentally fallen from bridges.

Highway administrator Terry Gibson says the state doesn’t want to discourage people from helping, but wants them to be safe.

The DOT is considering distributing fliers to schools and driver’s education programs.
