Christmas another day at work for firefighters

Most people had the day off today to enjoy Christmas with their families. But some people had to work, like Wilmington firefighters, to keep us safe.

This is Kinley Provencher’s first Christmas. Her dad Shannon is spending the holiday working as a Wilmington firefighter, so she and her mom stopped by the station for a visit.

“I thought I’d spread a little holiday cheer down here,” Shannon’s wife Wanda Provencher said, “so I brought some cookies.”

Wanda provencher says sharing her husband during the holidays is nothing new

“It’s hard, it’s hard,” she said. “They’re gone a lot, but we do the best that we can. It’s hardest on these kind of days when we don’t get to spend the holidays together, but we did most of our celebrating yesterday, so it works out.”

Some folks don’t mind the holiday work.

“I don’t mind working on Christmas,” firefighter Molly Jensen said. “Even if my shift wasn’t working, I would probably cover for one of the family guys so they could be home with their families.”

If these guys can’t be home for Christmas, being at the station, they say, is the next best thing.

“This is our second family,” firefighter Will Verreen said. “So you kinda don’t want to be here but you kinda do.”

“This is part of celebrating Christmas as well with our other family,” said Capt. Carl Oliver. “We depend on each other. Our lives are in each other’s hands every day that we go out there and perform our duties and services.”

Luckily, they got a chance to relax on this Christmas.

“Sometimes we’ll be wide open, and some days it’s just 24 hours of just sitting around having fun with each other,” Verreen said. “Hopefully on a day like today, with it being Christmas and everything it’ll stay quiet, so as long as we’re not working, nobody’s getting hurt, so that’s a good thing.”

If something did happen, the firefighters would be ready. The fire truck doors are always open, and their gear is ready to step into. Christmas or any other day of the year, these Wilmington heroes are proud to serve.
