WPD officer laid to rest

Body

A member of the Wilmington Police department was laid to rest Monday. Sergeant Joseph McPherson died last Monday after battling brain cancer for over a year.

Hundreds of police officers, family, and friends gathered at Scotts Hill Baptist Church Monday to celebrate the life of 36 year old Wilmington Police Sergeant Joseph McPherson, known to most as “Jody”. He died of brain cancer last week.

“He’s left too soon. It’s just sad, he was 36 years old, it’s just sad, a sad day for us,” Wilmington Police Chief, Ralph Evangelous said.

Sergeant McPherson served with the Wilmington Police department for 12 years.

“He was a role model, he was a hard worker, he was honest, and he had impeccable integrity. He was a great person, a great officer. We’re going to miss him, the department’s going to miss him. We’ll get through it but it won’t be fun, that’s for sure,” Evangelous added.

McPherson was a founding member of the department’s special enforcement response team, or ‘SERT’ and taught classes at the police department for Cape Fear Community College students.

“He was a super guy. He was compassionate, and caring; a great husband, a great father, and a super friend. I’ve known him all my life and he’s certainly been my hero, and we’re going to miss him,” life-long friend, Hoyle Koontz said.

Friends and family held hands, and held each other. One after another, a procession of law enforcement officers made their way to Oleander Memorial Gardens to pay their last respects.

“Just hold your family close, because really, they’re the most important thing to you.” Evangelous added.

Sergeant McPherson leaves behind his wife, Debbie, and two year old twin sons.
