Controversial video game, popular this holiday season
The guns look real, the blood looks real, and the situation is even more real than any others games in the past.
“I do feel like I’m actually in the game and it is pretty realistic,” gamer, David Kamituska said.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is on the top of many wish lists this Christmas. In a time when tens of thousands of troops are headed to Afghanistan, the similarities to the war are striking.
In the game, the soldiers look like marines and are armed with the latest in military technology. The mission? To kill terrorists.
The videogame is extremely violent, but it’s also extremely popular. It was released about a month ago on the birthday of the Marine Corps and since then, videogame experts say it’s the hot item this Christmas.
“It’s the realest thing on the market, and that’s real what separates it from other games on the market. In Halo, you shoot them and they fall over, but this is war, there’s blood on your screen, your character is breathing heavily, there is debris everywhere, things are exploding, there’s dust, there’s particle, it’s everything,” said Gamerz employee, Cody Bunn.
At Independence Mall in Wilmington, several people spend a couple hours playing the game. Gamerz arcade allows people to come in, pick a game and “play” by the hour. Employees say Modern Warfare 2 is by far, its most popular game.
“Its a first person shooter so you see your gun in front of you, you see your ammo, and your aimer and everything like that you’re basically running around tagging people, and they are trying to get you back. It’s pretty awesome,” said Gamerz employee, Alex Williams.
One Wilmington game shop says its holiday sales have tripled over last year, because of the gory game.
“Every type, I’ve seen kids, to actual marines, to men in their forties, everyone, just to play” Cody added.
Even though gamers love to play, many realize war is no game.
