Wilmington apartment complex evacuated after 911 call

Body

Residents of a Wilmington apartment complex had to be evacuated Monday night.

A resident of building 1001 in the Pines Apartment complex called 911 to report a strange chemical odor. Wilmington Fire and Hazmat crews responded and evacuated part of the building. Crews are still trying to determine what that odor was, but have ruled out the possibility of a meth lab.

“I smelled some kind of strong chemical,” said Betty Sturnberger. “I was sleeping and they knocked on the door and said I needed to evacuate because there was some sort of leak in the building and they’re not sure what it is right now.”

Wilmington Fire Department, Captain Mark Williamson said it could be from mixing the wrong cleaning chemicals, at first when we got the call, we suspected it that it might be a meth lab or something like that but all the meters have ruled that out, those chemicals haven’t showed up so we’re just searching trying to find the source of it now.

Two people were treated on the scene by EMS for exposure to the odor.
