Census Bureau: Hispanic participation important

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Roberto Belen is helping determine the politics of North Carolina and South Carolina – and how much money the states receive from the federal government – while working from
a radio booth in Charlotte.

The Charlotte Observer reported Tuesday that Belen is a specialist with the U.S. Census Bureau who’s encouraging Hispanics to participate in the 2010 Census.

Belen’s job is difficult because some Hispanics fear being deported if the government knows they’re in the United States. And some Hispanic groups are urging a boycott of the census until
Congress passes comprehensive immigration reform.

Belen says he keeps repeating this mantra: Census Bureau information can’t be shared with another agency. A law keeps personal census information private for 72 years.
