PINK HILL, N.C. — Sheriff’s deputies evacuated homes on a residential street in a North Carolina town after one woman was sickened by a pink powdery substance she received in the mail.

The Free Press of Kinston reported authorities shut down a street Tuesday in Pink Hill, about 90 miles southeast of Raleigh. Residents living near the sickened woman’s mobile home were evacuated briefly as a precaution.

Lenoir County officials say the woman was sent to the hospital. Her condition was not known.

Authorities say they haven’t identified the substance. Officials from the State Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and members of the National Guard were called to assist.
