RALEIGH, N.C. — New standards go into effect this week that could make North Carolina’s system of rating assisted-living homes more useful to people looking for a place for an older relative to live.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports Monday that the state will add a four-star rating for the best of what the state calls adult-care homes. Previously, the highest ranking was three.
In addition, the state will consider when determining a rating recent penalties for violations such as medication errors and failure to stop residents’ wandering.
State officials and industry representatives say the changes mean the homes will find it more difficult to receive a top rating. In the past, about 95 percent of the more than 1,200 centers in North Carolina did so.
