Slumping economy leads to record CFCC enrollment

Instead of heading to the unemployment office many people are choosing to go back to school. Hundreds of people lined up Tuesday for the last day of spring registration at Cape Fear Community College. So many people signed up for the spring semester that many classes were closed out.

This semester a record number of students enrolled at the community college. With area unemployment back above 10 percent, many people are trading the briefcase for a backpack and heading back to school. Students hope earning a degree will give them an edge over the competition and help them find a job.

“Right now I’m working part-time, and it’s just not quite enough,” student Megan Cruse said, “so I’m furthering my education so I can have an actual career and make good money.”

Some students will use the opportunity to learn about new career fields they have always had an interest in. Others are focused on learning skills that will help them get jobs in fields that continued to grow despite the recession. Health care remains the most popular field at CFCC.

Ultimately getting a higher education could be the difference between finding a job and staying unemployed. While the total unemployment rate is about 10 percent, the unemployment rate for folks without any college education is more than 15 percent.
