GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro hopes to get approval of a new doctoral program that would be unique in the state’s 16-campus University of North
Carolina system.

The News & Record of Greensboro reports the school will ask the UNC Board of Governors on Friday to approve a doctoral program in computational science and engineering. School officials say it would be the state’s first and join only nine colleges in the country that now offer such a degree.

The university began a master’s program in the field in spring 2005. The school says 17 people have received degrees so far, and all are employed.

Computational scientists and engineers are employed in fields that require modeling and simulation work, such as in the automobile industry.
