Brunswick Commissioners hedging on mental health center

Brunswick County Commissioners are not exactly on board with plans for a new mental health center. Several years ago, Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender Counties agreed on building an expanded Mental Health Crisis Center in Wilmington. But the state has changed the plans.

Instead of a clinic, Commissioners say the money will go toward building administrative offices in Wilmington. The building will cost nearly $5.8-million dollars. Brunswick taxpayers would pay about $117,000 a year for ten years to finance it. Commissioner Bill Sue said it needs more discussion.

“This new facility with 20,000 square feet,” Sue said, “I don’t know that it’s really going to serve the mentally ill patients in this region.”

Sue said there are already two mental health offices not being used in Brunswick County. The state recently ordered all public mental health agencies to cut staff-provided services in favor of contracting with private providers.
