Investigators say a 16-year-old girl is improving after a car crash in Brunswick County Tuesday afternoon that killed another driver. It happened on Highway 211 about five miles north of St. James Plantation.

Trooper John King tells us 18-year old Conrad Orth junior had pulled out to pass in a no passing zone when he smashed head-on into 16-year-old Kendra Horne who was coming in the opposite direction. Orth died instantly. King said he believe Orth was driving 65 or 70 miles an hour when the crash happened.

Horne, a student at South Brunswick High School, was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. King told WWAY Wednesday that Horne was upgraded from critical to stable condition after surgery Tuesday night.
